Upendra Limaye was born 8 November 1969, is an Indian film actor, who won the National Film Awardfor his role in the Marathi film Jogwa. On the centenary of Indian cinema in April 2013, Forbes included Limaye’s performance in the film on its list, “25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian Cinema”.
The actor was born and brought up in Sadashiv peth of pune, at the home of a Simple Middle Class family. None of his family members were related to the acting industry. A student of the New English High School, he was very active in school plays which were his first steps in the field of acting.
While still in College he acted in play called Padgham directed by Jabbar Patel. Later on he headed to Lalit Kala Kendra for a formal education in arts and drama.
His move to Mumbai came in 1998. Upendra is one of the few Marathi actors to have a national award against his name. This came for the movie Jogwa, which was unarguably one of his best performances till date.
In his younger days, he was also the co-founder of a natak platform called as Parichay which hosted different plays for a period of around a decade. Due to his strong acting skills and ability to perform in parrallel cinema, he has worked with big directors like Ram Gopal Verma, Jabbar Patel, Vinay Apte, Amol Palekar etc.
