Around a decade ago, a young athlete from Mumbai’s Currey Road neighbourhood took up kabaddi only to seek admission into a good college. Cut to now, he’s one of the core forces of the city’s very own kabaddi franchise.
Vishal Prabhakar Mane, 30, is rock-solid at his position of Right Cover with U Mumba. One of the league’s best defenders, Mane featured in all the games and even picked up the Best Defender title in 2014. His defensive displays in Season Two, earned him a call up for the National Camp this year. Moreover, his physique and demeanour made him an instant favourite with fans on television and social media.
During off season, Mane trains with the BPCL team for three hours a day. Having played for the Under-19 Maharashtra team, Railways and the Senior Nationals, he’s got his sights set on a place in the India squad.
At U Mumba’s games, this tattooed ‘tank’ is often cheered on by his son Arjun.
