Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was born on 23 March 1953 in Bengaluru in the state of Karnataka, India. She is an is an Indian billionaire entrepreneur, an Indian Chairperson, CEO, Entrepreneur, Businessperson, Biologist & Scientist. She is the founder of Biocon Limited. Kiran didn’t get disheartened and rather managed with whatever she had and kept on taking her company to new highs and is today considered as one of the leading firms in India. Biocon brought their IPO in the year 2004. After her company successfully listed at the exchange, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw became the richest woman in India then. Kiran also founded the Biocon Foundation. Through this foundation, she carried out philanthropic works. She actively carries out health and environmental programs to help the weaker section of the society. For her entrepreneurial achievements, she has received numerous accolades and honours. She has been conferred with the Padma Shri in 1989 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005 from the government of India. Kiran started her professional career by getting employed as a brewer learner at the famous company Carlton & United Beverages in Australia. She worked there for almost four years and then changed her job and started working at Biocon Biochemicals Limited in Ireland. The very same year she founded her own company named Biocon in India. She started her venture with a mere capital 10,000 INR. It was not easy for her to do business in India as lack of funds kept on troubling her business. Whenever she applied for a loan, the banks rejected her proposals firstly because biotechnology was a totally new concept in India then and secondly because of her gender. In those days, a female entrepreneur was considered as a dumb idea and to top that coming up with a completely new concept was even unaccustomed. In collaboration with McMillan India Limited and teacher Prathima Rao, Mazumdar-Shaw has supported development and use of a basic mathematics textbook, introduced in Kannada schools in 2006. She funded a multi-year research program by creating the Biocon Cell for Innovation Management with Prasad Kaipa at the Indian School of Business in 2009.
